Released on July 12, 2005 and distributed only to radio stations, A Missing Chromosome is a compilation of various non-LP tracks and B-sides by The Mars Volta. The title comes from the first line of the chorus in "A Plague Upon Your Hissing," "a missing chromosome walks."

Tracks 4-5 recorded 2002 – 2003 at The Mansion, Los Angeles. Produced by Rick Rubin and The Mars Volta for De-loused in the Comatorium; track 4 was left off the album, while track 5 appeared on The Australian Tour edition and the UK release.
Tracks 6-7 recorded 2004. Produced by The Mars Volta for Frances the Mute; track 6 appears on the "L’Via L’Viaquez" single, while track 7 appears on the "Widow" single (along with a live version of the title track).
