Description / Review:

————————

Delivered only moments after her fated collaboration with everyone’s favourite punching-bag DJ Shadow, this is the latest full-length from Charalambides’ Christina Carter, a woman with a catalogue that seems to be growing at an unstoppable pace. On ‘Electrice’ Carter sidesteps her more difficult work to hand-craft something more listenable and ultimately more vulnerable. Her simplicity is the key to the record’s success, as her untrained vocals cry out over delicately strummed guitar and drones, all submerged in a homespun lo-fi recording quality, it is hard not to want to take the record to your heart and listen with the lights turned down low. Apparently the simplicity was a restraint Carter imposed on herself, she set about to eliminate all excess elements – purposefully using the same key and the same guitar tuning for each track and not knowing about what she would sing about until she recorded the vocals. It’s lucky that this ended up working for her because it sounds like it could have been a disaster waiting to happen, but ‘Electrice’ is an album that if it were made by anyone else would likely fail. Carter’s gift is her ability to make the simple sound totally ethereal, and ‘Electrice’ is just about as ethereal a folk record you’re likely to find this year. A beautiful and deeply spiritual listening experience.
