Album info

Hey, so I recall this band getting great reviews the entire time they existed, and despite the fact that I enjoy aggressive music made by women, because this was “punk” and they were on a punk label (Epitaph), I basically never had any idea they were one of the best bands of the 90s until In The Red announced they were putting out a greatest hits double lp (geddit: http://intheredrecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/red-aunts-come-up-for-a-closer-look-1).

They rule. This is my favorite of their albums (though Saltbox is a close second, and they’re all pretty great).

yr label sez of its upcoming retrospective:

Red Aunts – Come Up For A Closer Look double LP

ITR 270

The Red Aunts were an all-female punk band that formed in 1991 in Long Beach, California, when Terri Wahl (guitar/vocals) recruited friends Kerry Davis (guitar/vocals), Debi Martini (bass/vocals), and Lesley Ishino (drums). Their brand of unfiltered music is toxic, taking a sharp claw to every riot grrrl cliché it can shred. After five albums, several years of touring, and a huge fan base, they called it quits in 1998. The girls recently decided it was time to wake people up and save the music with their unique form of ROCK. This is their “greatest hits” compilation, ‘COME UP FOR A CLOSER LOOK’ – a gatefold sleeve double album, complete with killer art and photos, plus liner notes by Red Aunts fan, Sasha Frere-Jones. First 100 on red with black splatter vinyl.

“The Red Aunts are nothing to mess with….wonderfully reckless rock.”
