Belter Records’ Bonehead Series 7

Compilation info

Belter’s confidence in the word “Crunchers” temporarily wavered upon compiling this, so the word “Crushers” in the torrent title is not a typo.

“Wildly anticipated second volume for this amazing series dedicated to rescuing classic ‘bonehead’ tracks from the late-60s through the late 70s, documenting that wild period of flux between garage/psych and metal “played by REAL men, beer guzzling guitar slingers safely on their way to oblivion”. Some amazing band names on this one – Maalstroom, Spontaneous Corruption, Black Hawk, Stonehenge – and the sonics are as profoundly pulverising as Volume 1. Inside’s amazing “Wizzard King” opens proceedings with a rip from “Born To Be Wild” inverted in a fantastically dumbo black magick rite, while Tom Hartman’s “Sunshine Woman” performs the same occult operation on The Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”. Maalstroom’s stupendous party USA anthem, uh, “There’s A Party Going On” features some of the wildest fuzz ever squoze from a stomp box while Spontaneous Corruption’s “Freaky Girl” goes past Bonehead and into the realms of Cromagnon with a classic weirdo exploito-psych side – “you’re my freaky baby – oh yeah.” . Indeed, over on side two when Maalstroom turn up again and threaten that they’re “Gonna Tell My Momma” it is enough to raise fear in the hearts of skinny white intellectual liberals everywhere. Connecticut’s Children have a classic hysteric metal sound and a penchant for evil women while Stonehenge top even them in the Deep Purple-on-ludes stakes. Throw in a bunch more braincell killing sides from Zekes, Brood, Crystal Rock and 3’s before ending on the mind-blowing Dickens track “Don’t Talk About My Music”. Reputedly a running joke put together by members of NRBQ’s road crew based on the premise that “an E chord played loud enough on an electric guitar was enough to satisfy a certain segment of the populace” it’s one of the wildest collapsing universe celebrations of big licks ever puked by roadies and a stunning way to end one of the wildest comps in recent memory. Hand-numbered edition of only 300 copies, already sold out at source, this one isn’t gonna last seconds, so make your move. Highly recommended!” – VT
