From The Red Dog to Straight Street “Seven Stories Productions” (2003) (Notes courtesy of Ross Hannan.)

1967, Fillmore West, San Francisco CA

01 – I Saw The Light [with flute introduction] (5:10)

Notes: One thing is certain, this was not recorded at the Fillmore West in 1967. During 1967 the venue was known as the Carousel Ballroom. The Charlatans, to the best of my knowledge never played the Carousel before May 3, 1968. The first Fillmore West show after Bill Graham renamed the Carousel was on July 5, 1968, the only shows that the Charlatans played at the Fillmore West were May 29 to June 1, 1969. It would be a reasonable assumption, given the flute Introduction, that this dates from 1969, whether it comes from the May 1969 shows at the Fillmore West is not clear.

June 14, 1969, San Francisco, CA

02 – Alabama Bound [Vocals cut in at 2:00] (9:27)

Notes: Assuming the date is correct, this is the second day of the three day opening of the Family Dog at the Great Highway. This seems perfectly reasonable. The Charlatans opened for the Jefferson Airplane.

1967, Straight Theatre, San Francisco, CA

03 – Alabama Bound [Vocals cut in at 1:28] (7:58)

04 – Folsom Prison Blues (3:02)

05 – Lulu’s Back In Town (1:08)

06 – I Always Wanted A Girl Like You (1:45)

Notes: The first cut was recorded at the Straight Theater on July 22, 1967, the second night of what was billed as the “Straight Theater Opening”. The first night had seen Quicksilver Messenger Service, Mount Rushmore, Salvation Army Banned and Mother Earth play and on the second night The Charlatans were joined by Country Joe and The Fish, Blue Cheer and Freedom Highway. The other three songs might be from another show.

June 1965, Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, NV

07 – Interview (0:23)

08 – Wabash Cannonball (7:45)

09 – When I Go Sailing By (2:23)

Notes: The interview was made a lot later than 1965. I have no idea where or when the two tracks were recorded, but they are early recordings.

1967, Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA

10 – Alabama Bound (9:26)

Notes: See the notes above for track 1, “I Saw The Light”.
