Review
————-

This is a pretty tenuous request fill, but this is a great compilation that has some great otherwise uncompiled tunes from a bunch of bands everyone knows, including The Extra Glenns, The Magnetic Fields, The Gothic Archies and Tullycraft. The Magnetic Fields song might actually be my favorite tune by them.

Also if anyone has the single or lp from Prickly you’ll be my hero – never seen it anywhere and I rather like the tune from them on here.

wiki sez:

Harriet Records was an American independent record label based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The label was founded by Harvard history professor Tim Alborn in 1989. The majority of Harriet’s releases were indie pop 7" vinyl singles, but eventually they started releasing full length CDs. Harriet is a bit legendary in the indie world for giving a number of notable artists their start. John Darnielle, Wimp Factor 14, My Favorite, Crayon, Six Cents and Natalie, Vehicle Flips, Tullycraft, and The Magnetic Fields all released early records on Harriet. After forty five singles and nine CDs Harriet shut its doors in 1998.

allmusic:

Given the insular and frequently obscure nature of the indie-pop world, and the fact that its output is oriented more toward singles than actual albums, samplers and compilations in this genre can take on a great deal of importance — take, for example, NME’s C-86 sampler, a collection which practically defined the early scene and has become a common means of referencing the sound. The Long Secret is another semi-legendary (at least among American pop-kids) collection — it features tracks from twee and indie-pop mainstays like the Vehicle Flips, the Mountain Goats, the Cat’s Miaow, the Lotus Eaters, Stephin Merritt’s Gothic Archies and Magnetic Fields, and a host of others. The most remarkable (and now semi-mythologized) track is Tullycraft’s "Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend’s Too Stupid to Know About," which references the pop scene about as perfectly as Mary Lou Lords’ "His Indie World" — the song tosses out unforgettable couplets like "he likes the Breeders, he thinks Green Day’s pretty swell / what about the Bartlebees and Neutral Milk Hotel?" or "you can throw away the Lemonheads CDs that he gave you / cause you and me got Heavenly and Nothing Painted Blue, " and you can almost feel the International Pop Underground rejoicing.
