Mississippi Records’ latest Abner Jay release- Folk Song Stylist- is a sweet suprise. This collection of early tracks clearly predate his True Story/One Man Band era, and seem to run the gamut of Popular 1960s Americana. That is- a dynamic range of gospel, soul and blues are in full effect, but there’s also a definite country balladeer thing going on here, at times strangely reminscent of, say, Marty Robbins. And I mean that in the best of ways. Folks, this guy has some serious pipes! After just one morning with this record, its already a household favorite.
