This collects together some high quality recordings of Neil Young live, some with musician friends (largely Crosby, Stills and Nash), and even

one or two where he may not have been there…cheating? Maybe…I make these compilations for me and if I feel it’s appropriate I share them.

This was an ideal way for me to collect some great Neil Young performances that don’t easily fit on any other compilation I’ve done.

Including my few favourite CSNY moments (there aren’t many but those collected together here are ones I do love), even ones where Neil wasn’t

fully involved seemed ideal to me personally, and beside “Neil Young and friends” is a good cover-all term for this!

There’s some amazing tracks here…the bumps on the microphone during Everybody’s Talkin’ and Human Highway are made up for by the entrancing performances!

I feel this is a great selection of high quality recordings, and a good companion piece to the 1973 and 1976 collections, I hope you enjoy it too.

Enjoy.

PS / Technical notes

An earlier seed of this was withdrawn, because Cinnamon Girl from 1970 had had an official release

as a download, and the provenance of the CSNY Inglewood tracks had to be checked.

On getting advice from a couple of scholarly Neil Young fans – through Dime – the dates of the CSNY

Four Way Street recordings seemed to be clearly different to the 1970 live CSNY tracks (the ones

on this comp are from the “Neil Young in Concert” Swingin’ Pig CD).

However on finally finding my Four Way Street CD I checked each recording carefully : I found that

the medley was too close for comfort in sound to the official release, so I left that off. The other

tracks had several key differences :

On The Way Home

The version on 4 Way Street is in a lower key, and played in a more relaxed, less intense way.

Southern Man

Lily Bell occurs 2 minutes later than the 4 Way Street version, and this is a minute shorter than the latter.

Ohio

On 4 Way Street this is played at a slower pace, and is less intense. The ending is different too.

Cowgirl in the Sand

version on 4 Way is ‘slightly’ different as it is acoustic, as opposed to being played by the full band here.
