After four full-lengths, four EPs, and christening gothic rock with the genre-defining “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” frontman Peter Murphy left Bauhaus in 1983 to pursue his solo career. Luckily, Daniel Ash and roommate/roadie Glenn Campling had started brewing their own project a year or so earlier, and had recruited Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins to form Tones on Tail. Like its predecessor, ToT’s prolificacy was matched with quality. The band recorded a full-length, simply titled Pop, and a slew of EPs and seven inches in less than two years before trading Campling for David J and evolving into Love and Rockets, a project that reunited the original Bauhaus lineup sans Murphy, but favored bad power ballads and painfully generic pop to the bold, brooding experimentalism that made Bauhaus such an important band.
Weird Pop is a 19-track double LP that collects the best of the ToT’s output along with a couple of rarities from Campling’s personal archive, like the original version of “Performance” and a studio rendition of Elvis’ “Heartbreak Hotel.” Its release accompanies a barrage of Bauhaus vinyl re-issues, including vinyl versions of Mask, In The Flat Field, and the excellent comp Crackle; Murphy’s first solo outing, Should The World Fail To Fall Apart; and L&R’s unwarranted bore of a best-of, Sorted. Beggars has given Tones on Tail the compilation treatment a staggering four times. And for good reason– Ash, Campling, and Haskins really broadened the concept of goth rock, combining the more challenging, Bauhaus-like qualities that’re served raw on “Copper” and “When You’re Smiling,” with the strong pop sensibility of singles like “War” and “Go!”– later sampled by Moby on his ’91 single of the same name.
Still, a textbook exercise in pop moderation fails to separate Tones on Tail from the growing number of rising but digestible bands like The Cure and Danse Society in ’83. ToT’s greatness lies in their breadth of style, from the dark samba of “Lions” to the surf-rock creeper “Twist” and the sax-laden, tremolo-soaked “Movement of Fear.” But they weren’t satisfied with just pushing the boundaries of their genre. Ash also explored new ways of playing guitar with the Ebow– a handheld device that had recently been used in John Cage’s A Postcard from Heaven for harps, and was designed to stimulate and sustain strings with a neon blue electromagnetic field. With the ability to exploit different harmonics based on the Ebow’s placement relative to the guitar pickups, Ash adopted sharp, shrill timbres for chromatic, melody-driven tracks like “Christian Says” and “Burning Skies,” and used it as a thickening agent on the epic pop symphony, “Rain.” The boundless creativity and relentless genre-jumping of Weird Pop shows one of positive punk’s most admirable qualities: “an intelligent and natural interest in mystery.
