Compilation info
“It’s common knowledge that at VT New Zealand has long been close to the centre of our universe, with a particular jones for the Christchurch sound as articulated by the Flying Nun label. But prior to Flying Nun there was the legendary Onset/Offset Records who released a buncha key early sides by underground groups like Riptoids, The McGoohans, Ritchie Venus etc. Krypton Ten compiles a buncha primo early Christchurch avant/garage action that originally released as part of the label’s Krytpon series of barely distributed cassettes and vinyl between the glory years of 1981-1987 and taken together it reads as an extended blueprint for everything that was to come. This lovingly compiled LP comes with a gatefold sleeve and a ton of amazing archival snaps as well a buncha inserts with extensive track notations and information. A slew of central players are already present here, not least of which is Bill Direen of Vacuum/The Bilders at all, who is represented here with a track by The Bilderbergers, and Peter Stapleton, also of Vacuum, who turns up here with the amazing Scorched Earth Policy, truly one of the most savagely beautiful of the early NZ underground groups. Elsewhere there are tracks from the Axemen, Alec Bathgate of Tall Dwarfs, the seminal The Puddle, Riptoids, The McGoohans, They Were Expendable, Straf, Cherry Smash, G.O.D., Ritual Sex, We Too, George D. Henderson, The Bottletops, Limbo Dancers, The Oxes, Nick Slick, The Chance, Dillinger’s Brain, Ritchie Venus & The Blue Beetles, Omar’s Price, The Connoisseurs, Drowning Is Easy and The Gorillas. If you are in any way interested in the particular way that NZ groups mainlined garage and folk and DIY and experimental modes and single-handedly reinvented underground rock by trashing the canon altogether in favour of an alternate current that was fully plugged into what was happening well beneath the counter culture then this is the map you’ve been waiting for. The music combines that hazy edge of the world appeal of alla the best NZ music and contains the seeds for everything that has happened since; if you dig The Dead C, This Kind Of Punishment, Alastair Galbraith, The Pin Group, Renderers et al then you might wanna move in and spend some serious time here. Simply cannot recommend this amazing compilation enough, a core VT release and very highly recommended!” –VT
