The jury is still out on whether the late Bim Sherman, who died of cancer in 2000, was a truly great singer. His voice was thin and quavery and his control over it was not always complete, yet at his best he delivered his messages of romantic devotion, spiritual uplift, and political criticism with a gentle grace that was unmatched by any other singer of his generation. This fine collection of dub versions features his voice quite extensively, although, in typical dub fashion, the voice is treated as simply one more instrument in the mix; like the guitar, bass, and drums, it pops in and out unexpectedly and is subjected to various echo and delay effects. With the exception of the aggressively funk-oriented “Beyond the Hill Dub” (which was recorded and mixed at On-U Sound Studios and produced by Adrian Sherwood), these are all straight-ahead roots reggae rhythms in the old-school tradition, provided by the Soul Syndicate, the Roots Radics, and the Gladiators and produced by Sherman himself. Highlights include “Love Forever Dub” (in a drastically different arrangement from that found on the obscure African Rubber Dub, Vol. 2) and “World Dub,” a deeply mystical cut on the plaintive “My Whole World” rhythm. Highly recommended to all lovers of dub, not just Bim Sherman fans.
