Album info
Allmusic: Guitarist Don Howland and drummer Lamont Thomas, aka Bassholes, are caught somewhere between nostalgic reverence for original garage culture and the proto-alt-punk of bands like Mudhoney. On HAUNTED HILL, their second LP, the duo offers up a lo-fi racket that can easily be seen as inspiration for the good-humored psychobilly of bands like Rocket From The Crypt, the rustic jangle of future Midwest upstarts like the Goodnight Loving, and the endearing grunginess of overlooked college rockers such as The Grifters. Of the record’s 17 tracks, its most concise moment is an obscure cover of The Fugs’ “Grief Bird.” But it’s a fitting choice, as this HILL is haunted by a slacker misanthropy that suits the gruff production and mashing up of early rock-&-roll tradition.
Note: The bonus track is audio of a skipping CD, so that’s how it’s supposed to sound.
