They are by no means proficient, but Portland trio Glass Candy have made astounding progress in the two years since their ratty debut, Love Love Love, replacing that record’s retardo-Blondie fervor, fragmented structures and sub-Lydia Lunch posturing with the neon-tinted blaze of Johnny’s booming 808s and Miss Ida No’s frothy, cool-as-the-queen vocal tirades.
Iko Iko is the sound of a gaggle of nattily dressed hipster disco types trashing a classic recording for their own amusement (and the comparatively paltry chunk of change that goes along with it). Those of you looking for nostalgia had better look again — the song you knew and loved as a child is barely recognizable here. It’s been whipped, pissed on and just generally mauled into a festering heap of shortwired guitars, glass-gargling screams and AK-47-style drum programming. The two new tracks that back it (“Sugar & Whitebread” and “Lovin’ Machine”) are easily the best things the trio has ever laid to tape, huffing and puffing like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on an aerobics and meth binge at an all night NYC discotheque. Totally. Fucking. Ace.
