Made up of members from bands such as Deaf Wish, UV Race, Dick Diver and Total Control, it’s understandable that you’d expect this band to produce some nice little numbers. Lower Plenty recorded their debut 2nd album Hard Rubbish almost a year ago, thank god it’s got to see the light of day for all of us who don’t have a friend in the band that would give us a sneaky preview.
In a great interview with Mess + Noise, Jensen Tjhung describes the recording process, “We went to my place with an eight-track reel-to-reel. Al and I sat down and worked out what was going on. The whole record is the first take. On one of the songs you can hear the reel run off. Then we just left it on the machine for like six months. [Laughs] So we actually recorded it this time last year. These things sometimes take a while.”
The record is delicate, yet has a certain no-frills feel about it garnered from the recording process. ‘Strange Beast’ is a beautiful duet, where Sarah Heyward‘s vocals sound as if they are coming from the rafters. ‘Nullabor’ is a more slow paced, driving tack that deliberates on the actions of a girl who drove a commodore across a unforgiving desert, vocals are almost spoken, much akin to ‘Bring Me Down’ by Twerps, yet grittier guitar.
