this recording is missing most of track 4, and anything that happened after track 9. (bowing… is not a usual closing song for 76 Ponty show) this appears to be 2 sets, so I’ve put it into 2 folders. all the songs in here except track 4 seem to be complete (track 4 was probably more like 10-15 minutes, typical length for most 75 and 76 live Ponty songs. apparently the taper fell asleep or didn’t flip the tape over until the song ended. either he (she?) only had 1 tape, or I only got the part 1 of it in a tape trade many years ago. I was considering leaving track 4 out entirely, since it’s just a little snip of the song, but I left it since I recieved it this way and wanted to preserve the set sequence as much as possible. It’s a decent recording. (I give it a “VG” or B sound rating)
having seen them in Boston a few weeks later, I know they played a similar show (great one, still hoping it will be posted) of about 105-110 minutes. this is in a small club, a little different feel and sound than the Berklee Performance Center is. not a real “hi-fi” recording but good enough to hear all the instruments. (which is essential with a 76 Ponty show.) no, once is not enough to hear a 76 Ponty show. the 75 and 76 era for Ponty was flourishing in great music, featuring songs from “upon the wings of music” and “aurora” both essentials to any jazz fusion collection. Before Mark Craney there was Norm “Have No Fear” Fearrington on drums, and both of them are very good, so no need to “fear” that Norm is probably not in here.
