“An English post-punk band that made a show of ducking any and all attention in the late ’70s and early ’80s, The Homosexuals wrote elaborate suites that masqueraded as tossed-off rock songs. Anthologized almost entirely on the three-disc Astral Glamour (Messthetics), the group careened through a surfeit of ideas that should leave compatriots embarrassed by comparison: Songs like “Soft South Africans” traverse gussied-up go-go, frantic disco, bubblegum pop, and greasy honky-tonk rock, all in under four minutes. The title track files through wondrous non sequiturs that play like art-school anthems: “Global pupils radiating interference / Picasso, Lamborghini, Coke, and dry martini… / Semen in the region—immaculate!” Other songs trade in smeary stabs at dub and intricate studio techniques, highlighting a time when the DIY ethos fancied more than subtraction” -av club
