Description / Review:

————————

Limited-edition triple 12″ and display card in a fold-out shower-curtain display with metal grommets to hang on the wall.

Ira Kaplan told Pitchfork’s Paul Thompson that Yo La Tengo purposefully intended to “cut down on some of the sprawl” on the upcoming Fade. “Ohm” doesn’t extend out in length like past triumphs such as I Am Not Afraid of You And I Will Beat Your Ass’ “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind”, but it does reach toward the same kind of brilliant simplicity this band often deploys to etch out their longer songs. The open-ended nature of their circular riffing makes if feel like a track that’s been reduced down from something bigger, with the band aiming to work only with the very essence of their sound. It aligns “Ohm” with the poppier material from Yo La Tengo’s back catalog, returning to the same kind of warm, melancholy feel of I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One’s “Sugarcube”.

Even Kaplan’s guitar pyrotechnics are kept intentionally brief here, instead acquiescing to softly anthemic vocal melodies that close out the track. There’s something welcoming and familiar to those vocal lines, producing the kind of quiet glow you get when showing up to a favorite place you haven’t visited in too long and finding it hasn’t changed so much. Some things may have subtly altered in the world of Yo La Tengo, but there’s definitely a sense of returning to a safe spot that fans of the band habitually find solace in every few years. It’s there in Kaplan’s sweet voice, in Georgia Hubley’s understated drumming, in that short and spiky guitar break. This isn’t such a different version of the band after all.
