Deerhoof have always struck me as one of the most consistently innovative guitar based bands of the last two decades. Across 16 years and 10 albums, they’ve merged psychedelia and punk with folk and garage rock stylings as well as having been cited as an influence on bands as prominent and far ranging as Women, Grizzly Bear and Dirty Projectors. The new recording, The Merry Barracks, fitted with punkish fuzz bass and awkward, off-balance time signatures, is characterised by weird falsettos and strange synthesized sounds which join and fade sporadically from the percussive skeleton. Although the track always sounds as if it is on the brink of falling apart, there’s a strangely confident greatness about it – echoing somewhat Wolf Parade and Dirty Projectors, or some vague combination of the two.
