We all know Ty Segall can blast out some of the best face-melters of anyone in San Francisco the world right now. But guess what? Dude can write some pretty sweet songs, too. With melodies and stuff.
That’s the takeaway from Goodbye Bread, the new album from this local mischiefmaker, which just today received the Pitchfork stamp of approval in the form of an 8.1 score. But neither you nor we need those Chi-town haystackers to tell us that Segall is on to something great with the slower, more focused collection of songs that’s out today on Drag City. And if you don’t believe us, well, now you can hear the whole thing for yourself.
If you still need persuading, here’s what Pitchfork’s David Bevan said about the album:
“In Goodbye Bread, his first full-length for Drag City, Segall has embraced singer-songwriter craft wholeheartedly. While garage rock O.G.s like the Troggs and the Stooges continue to be an influence, Segall has turned in a relatively calm effort here, choosing to downshift into slower tempos and cleaner sounds, evoking instead the work of John Lennon, Neil Young, and Marc Bolan. Heavyweights. But what makes Goodbye Bread such a success is that we get an even keener sense of what a Ty Segall song sounds like and what that means.”
