Freeze! Hands in the air dirtbag! France’s Funk Police are here to jail your ass to the dance floor. Like some brilliant combination of Liquid Liquid, ESG and Adrian Sherwood fronted by a Damo Suzuki/Alan Vega reverbed lunatic, the Funk Police pump out glue wave post punk booty movers. This record is unstoppable fun that will break your brain if you think to hard on it, so might as well just get in to the groove, boy you gotta prove your love to the Funk Police. The folks at Avant! records are behind this release and they seem as baffled as we are by what they’ve unleashed on the masses:
“Yep, the French, again! Looks like there’s no way not to deal with these guys for us at Avant!… After the Waiting For The Cheerleaders To Get Drunk 7” by The Feeling Of Love and that little gem that has been the Scorpion Violente LP, we are really glad to release one more piece of insanity outta Metz/Strasbourg. Funk Police is Guillaume from AH Kraken/The Feeling Of Love, Nafi from Scorpion Violente/The Dreams/The Anals, and their old mate Thierry (previously in Dust Breeders and Flowers Of Darmstadt) and they bring the typical no-wave blind fury of La Grande Triple Alliance Internationale De l’Est all over some smoky dark funk grooves. Like nowadays Slits, Pop Group or Public Image Ltd., Funk Police steal black rhythms from an hypothetical rainforest and hurl them into their concrete jungle, while James Brown and James Chance stand there nodding. Throbbing bass, sharp upbeat guitars and schizoid vocals over the haunting tribal drums. Ten damp tracks on 33rpm black vinyl with stunning artwork by Sylvie P.!”
With killer cuts like “Back Inside You”, “Coco Dance”, “Horsefag”, “Now I Can Funk” and “Red Blood Black Boobs” you know “Hot We Are Funk We Play” is a head scratching party starter. The Funk Police lay down the law with 10 cuts of bonkers bass line driven dancey post punk lunacy. If you’ve been digging any of the French bands affiliated with these guys (Anals, Dreams, Scorpion Violente, Feeling Of Love, Dust Breeders) or the likes of Cheveu, early Boredoms, 80’s NYC dance punk / no wave than you best cop (sorry, couldn’t resist) this one now-like. This one’s got lights out underwear dance party written all over it. This thing is deliriously recommended.
