Description / Review:
————————
Having listened through just once, it’s as good as I’d hoped, dream-like vocals, shoegazey sounds, occasional baggy-esque drum beats -My Bloody Valentine by numbers, no bad thing.

Opening track ‘she found now’ could have been lifted straight from Loveless, it’s shoegaze as it should be done – etherial vocals from Kevin Shields, heavy distortion on rhythm guitar and a meandering lead guitar riff.

‘only tomorrow’ is also in Loveless territory, with trademark vocals and guitar distortion but with a steady upbeat from the rhythm section.

‘who sees you’ keeps a jangly major / minor riff combination heavy on bending chords, moving to a typically off-key dual vocal.

‘is this and yes’ – an obtuse-sounding organ led track with Bilinda Butcher’s vocals sneaking up a third of the way through.

‘if I am’ – A Butler vocal-led track with some lovely harmonic slide guitar work.

‘new you’ – Possibly the most accessible track on the album, it’s light on melodic distortion, has a recognisable drum-beat and a terribly catchy 90s-indie-pop rhythm to it. It is the only track on the album I wasn’t crazy about, but that’s probably a statement of personal preference.

‘in another way’ – This track is surprisingly my favourite on the album, it’s very listenable and has an ‘Isn’t Anything’ sound about it, though with a 4/4 beat as its back bone, still relatively light on the distortion and has fewer of those more ‘trademark’ Valentine sounds – or at least the ones I’d normally prefer. Naturally they mess with the time structure somewhat and throw in some absurdity, which is probably why I like it.

‘nothing is’ – A fast drumming, guitar looping instrumental, I think it speeds up toward the end, needs a second listen through to confirm.

‘wonder 2′ – Terrific closer, sounds otherworldly and wonderfully, I’ll use this word again, obtuse. Slightly mesmerised by the drumming on this one, fast yet quiet pitched against synth-sounds which shift in key, time and fuck it, probably also in space. Yeah ‘otherworldly’ and shifting in ‘time’ and ‘space’. Take the cliché, take it!

So on first listen, I like it… a lot. I suspect many fans will – it’s My Bloody Valentine sounding like My Bloody Valentine making the trademark sounds of My Bloody Valentine and there are tracks easily accessible to new comers. Sure, there’s no Only Shallow or When You Sleep, not even a Sueisfine but it’s still a fine listen.

Worth the wait? 21 years is a fair chunk of time, but on one listen through, quite probably, given the band’s creative force, Kevin Shields penchant for taking his time over things there’s a far chance some of the tracks have been in production for that long, it’s rather hard to tell. A certainty is that it will be a delight to hear it performed live alongside some of the band’s seminal classics.
