Event Details
Robyn Hitchcock describes his songs as ìpaintings you can listen toî. The eclectic English born singer- songwriter is temporarily relocating to Australia, neatly avoiding the ferocious English summer, in pursuit of the two passions in his life ñ painting and songwritingÖ so we asked him if he would be so kind as to play some shows while he was here.
Bob Dylan’s Birthday
In 2002 Robyn Hitchcock released ‘Robyn Sings’, an album comprised entirely of Bob Dylan songs. All Music has this to say of the album – “Without sounding sacrilegious, Hitchcock’s voice is more pleasing than Dylan’s and his acoustic guitar playing is also better, making his versions, much like the Byrds’ and Jimi Hendrix’s before him, arguably superior to the Dylantakes.”
To celebrate Bob’s 73rd birthday ‘Robyn sings Dylan’ will be performed at The Basement Sydney on Friday May 23 and at The Flying Saucer Club Melbourne on Friday May 30th .
Robyn is anticipating a few musical friends dropping by for these special shows so why not make it an imperative to join them.

ROBYN HITCHCOCK
Bob Dylanís Basement Tapes
Live at the Basement
Fresh from two secret guest appearances at the Melbourne Caravan Club 4-day ëBobfestí Robyn Hitchcock announces he will be performing for one show only Bob Dylanís Basement Tapes at the most appropriate venue in Australia ñ Sydneyís Basement.
Recorded with The Band at Woodstockís ëBig Pinkí house, the Basement Tapes are part of rock and roll history. With Dylan recovering from a career changing motorcycle accident he and The Band got together initially play covers for the sheer fun of it. Eventually though Dylan began to introduce new works to the mix, many of which (including “I Shall Be Released”, “This Wheel’s on Fire”, “Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)”, “Tears of Rage” and “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”) would become Dylan standards.
Adding to the legend of these recordings Dylan decided rather than release them himself, he would provide the songs to other musicians, inviting them to record their own versions. To this end a white label disc featuring 14 of the new songs was pressed up and circulated to friends and other musicians.
Recordings of the songs by artists such as Peter, Paul & Mary, The Byrds, Ian & Sylvia, Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger, Manfred Mann, Fairport convention and The Band started racing up the charts and appearing on albums leading and the interest in the original Dylan recordings led to the release of rockís first bootleg album, The Great White Wonder.
Eventually in 1975 Dylan consented to the release of 16 of the recording on Bob Dylan and the Band album ëThe Basement Tapesí immediately being proclaimed by the New York Times as ìone of the greatest albums in the history of American popular musicî.
The legend never finished there though with more than 5 hours of recordings appearing unofficially over the years and an entire book was written about the sessions (Greil Marcus ëinvisible Republic/ The Old Weird Americaí). The direction of rock music itself was changed as a result of The Basement Tapes. Bob Dylan delved further into his roots history with ëJohn Wesley Hardingí, The Band recorded the seminal ëMusic From Big Pinkí, the Beatles abandoned studio gimmickry for the back to basics ëLet It Beí and The Byrds with Gram Parsons sent America in the direction of country rock.
On Friday May 23rd Robyn Hitchcock will perform the major new works written and recorded by Bob Dylan during those memorable sessions.
