Here is the comments of this double vinyl from the huge “Dream Giver” site replaced now by “Dream Giver Redux”:
Format: Double LP in colour picture sleeve.
Release Information: Music Brandenburg (Sleeve)/Wind Records SM-1 (Labels)
Concert Source: 1986-01-20, Eissporthalle, Berlin, Germany
Quality: 7/10Additional Information:
The opening synths of the untitled intrumental are drowned out by talking in the crowd, shouts and hand claps.
This is very clearly an audience recording.
Despite that, once “Simple Minds” get going on ‘Waterfront’, they can be heard clearly.
Another super long version of ‘Waterfront’ is followed by ‘Speed your love to me’ (with Jim thanking the support “TC Matic” in the break).
‘Up on the catwalk’ annouces Jim and the band immediately rush into a very quick version of the song (only the ‘I will be spinning’ break in the middle is performed slowly).
‘Is everything OK? From an album called ‘Sparkle in the rain’, this is called The ‘book of brilliant things’.
And a great performance is ruined when the bootleggers fade out the song half way through. The bootleg returns with Jim dedicating ‘Ghostdancing’ to Amnesty and Nelson Mandela.
‘We can go back’ says Jim, about to introduce ‘Don’t you (Forget about me)’ and some wag in the crowd shouts a song title.
‘Not that far’ counters Jim. An interesting version of ‘Don’t you (Forget about me)’ follows since Charlie tries some very different guitar playing after Jim shouts ‘Or will you walk away’.
After a noticeable break in the recording, Jim annouces ‘Promised you a miracle’ and then the volume levels go wild -another bad mark against this recording-.
Interesting version because Sue gets a namecheck during this performance, and the slow ending is extended with Jim adding extra ‘Everything is possible’ lyrics.‘Once upon a time’ gets the same introduction as before, followed by: ‘This song is about our hometown of Glasgow – ‘Oh Jungleland”.
The band immediately continue with ‘All the things she said’ where John Giblin gets an annoucment and a solo.
‘Beauty and the beast, they take a walk and don’t come back again – This is ‘Street hassle”.
A slightly different arrangement follows with Jim singing over Mick’s piano near the end.A great performance of ‘Alive and kicking’ with Robin getting her introduction near the end of the song, which she then takes on and complete perfectly.
She also adds her vocals on ‘Someone somewhere (In summertime)’ with its ‘I’ve got to be with someone, I’ve got to be with someone, in summertime’ ending.
The bootleg completes with a slightly shorter take on the new version of ‘The american’.Some hiss, loads of audience noise and talk during the breaks, volume problems, songs fading out, but still a reasonable bootleg and worth searching out because what remains is good quality.
Occasionnally there’s some surface noise from the LP itself, or distortion from the original source (most heard during ‘Don’t you (Forget about me)’) but that just may be my copy. This bootleg has the worst label titles of any I’ve seen. Here goes:
I want you – Waterfront
Speed your love to me
Up on the cat – Up on the catwalk
The book – Book of brilliant things
Goth dancing – Ghostdancing
Don’t you forget – Don’t you (Forget about me)
Chance – Promised you a miracle
Once upon a time
Utjugalan – Oh Jungleland
Sweet H – Street hassle
Blue moon – Alive and kicking
Someone somewhere – Someone somewhere (In summertime)
American – The americanWeird stuff!
