Description / Review
————————

The brand of rapid fire, punk, blues rock, and garage punk played by Cleveland’s This Moment in Black History is not for everyone. This Moment In Black History is not for those of you with delicate ears. This Moment In Black History is not for those of you with delicate sensibilities. The music is frantic, jarring, and grating. It’s uncomfortable music made in uncomfortable times. In a world where down is up and the truth is a lie, This Moment In Black History is your wake up call. A wake up call that consists of a fist in the face and a shock to the soul.

It Takes A Nation of Assholes To Hold Us Back was recorded over a two day period in Chicago with legendary sound engineer Steve Albini. In true Steve Albini style, he let This Moment In Black History dictate the sound on the record. There’s no effort to rein in the spastic sonic assault of Chris Kulcsar’s howling voice, Buddy Akita’s speedy blues and garage riffs, and the low end pouding of the rhythm section Lawrence Daniel Caswell and Lamont Thomas. The result is an album that overflows with the the type of ferocity that is so abundant in their live shows.

The disc starts off with the short fifties style documentary reading, “World B Free.” Consider it your call to arms, or your last warning, for when the history lesson is over, This Moment In Black History get hell bent on destroying history as they unleash 13 songs and 33 minutes of incendiary messages with their eyes focured squarely on the right. “Garbage In/Garbage Out” takes old style rock-a-billy rhythms, churns it with a healthy dose of punk rock, and Chris Kulcsar spits it right back in your face. “Tape Don’t Lie” is a garage rocker. That’s the simple description. In reality, it’s manic, fierce, and fast, with Buddy Akita ripping off machine gun riffs, over the constant pounding of the rhythm section of Lawrence and Lamont. Social change can be exhausting work, so by the time “Code Unknown” comes around, it’s not entirely surprising to hear a Chris sing a little to a tempo slower than high speed blender. It’s the change of pace rocker filled with impending danger, as opposed to being face to face with danger. It Takes A Nation of A**holes To Hold Us Back closes with the epic and exhaustive “Nailed To The Cross.” Clocking in at just over six minutes, it’s a bold statement on religion and hypocrisy. It’s also a bold statement of This Moment in Black History’s musicianship. Again the rhythm section keeps it tight, while Buddy Akita is given the freedom to unleash six minutes of agressive punk rock riffs.

This Moment In Black History have made a statement with It Takes A Nation of Assholes To Hold Us Back. First of all, the Cleveland art punk tradition is alive and well. It’s not a reach to group This Moment In Black History with area legends like The Dead Boys, Rocket From The Tombs, and Pere Ubu. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, This Moment In Black History is spreading their gospel, and spreading it loud: rock and roll is not meant to be safe, and if you’re on the wrong side, you’re not safe either.
