Formed in Bristol already in the early 90’s, The Heads is without a doubt one of the best heavy, guitar-driven psych rock bands in the world right now. The band blasts your consciousness especially live with their wild playing and even harder-hitting volume level. This live album released as a limited edition double vinyl was recorded summer 2008 at Tilburg’s 013 venue that is also home to the amazing Roadburn Festival every spring. At the time, the band was on tour with the US band Wooden Shjips and I must say that I really would have liked to experience this combination… The vinyl version was preceded by a CD (200 copies, comes with different artwork) that I ordered immediately. That was a good move, since it sold out very fast! The Finns were lucky in February 2010 when we got The Heads to play at our Psychotropic Caravan Festival in Helsinki, after which the band was nice enough to give me this fine vinyl version too, so I guess it’s about time I review it now.
Tilburg was assembled from four different stereo recordings one of which was from the soundboard. The sound quality is a bit rough, but still very good and you can hear everything very well. A bit scabby, raw sound suits this band just perfectly, anyway! The album starts off little by little with psychedelic sound effects intro to slow and hypnotic instrumental “Bedlam” and then they rock hard and heavily with a new song called “Cardinal Fuzz”. This is a really great track that has elements from Jimi Hendrix to stoner rock! ”Could Be, Doesn’t Matter” has raw, punk styled power that is emphasized by Simon’s nihilistic vocals. As well as the previous piece, “Long Gone” was originally released on Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere album in 2000 and offers excellent opportunities for mind-expanding guitar solos and that’s exactly what we get once again. The use of effects is very inventive and downright insane! The old classic “Widow Maker” is played with fierce energy while Simon spits out the vocals in his careless style. My head will explode! Then it’s time for a long (14:29) and slower-paced ”Creating in the Internal Now” that freezes into psychedelic, experimental effect noise in the middle when the rhythm fades out. This instrumental track has lots of different stuff and it’s highly effective to the human brain. The total cerebral destruction is done with the over 15-minute-long version of the old riff monster “Spliff Riff”. After this jam the audience will be just a drooling, droopy mass with dilated eyes popping out here and there. Really convincing! The Heads is one of the best bands around so you should get this album soon while it’s still available. Warning: after listening to this over one-hour-long package in a suitable state of mind your friends might not recognize you anymore.
