Year of the Crowes Vol I Disc 1

Subtitled "Year of the Crowes Vol I", this is Disc 1 of a further three-disc instalment of the "Cover me with a good Dream" 5-CD set, covering (no pun intended)audience recordings of performances of other artists’ songs from 2005. The original version was a very quick cut-and-paste job using various audience recordings without seguing, applying fades, or taking into account the length of applause for tracks played at the end of sets. Additionally, the first song, "Bob Dylan’s "Odds and Ends" had several drop-outs, and dates and venues were not identified by the compiler.

This version fixes these faults wherever possible. Tracks have been faded in/out where they do not segue with the ones before or after them, and excessive applause (and occasionally, the start of the next song from the original concert recording) has been trimmed. Dates/venues have been identified as far as possible. The first track has been repaired, though a couple of faults are audible (notably some static at 4:39) (repairs at 4:20, 1:26, 1:27, 1:31, 2:11, 2:15, 4:02, 4:16, 4:17 4:36 4:37 4:39). And "Fearless" has been moved from being Track 12 to the end of the disc, as it finishes with the annoncement of a ten minute break, which was a more satisfying way to finish the disc.

Tracks:
1. Odds and Ends <5:16>
2. Pardon My Heart <3:46>
3. Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You <4:31>
4. Ride On A Pony <5:10>
5. You Don’t Miss Your Water <5:30>
6. Glad and Sorry <4:46>
7. Do Right Woman, Do Right Man <4:50>

10. Sin City <5:05>

Notes on dates/venues
I am of course hugely indebted to Crowesbase.com for even the possibility of gleaning the details of what was played when and where. It has been a few days of headachy working out what belongs where. Some things were only played once, and knowing that the original compilation came out in Nov 2005 helped eliminate many alternatives.

However, some tracks’ details are little more than educated guesses. I eliminated some shows where other covers were played but not included. I also used descriptions of how songs sounded, and quotes from Chris, the sound of the warm up notes of the next song to be played, the sound of the same voices near the taper in the audience, and how far into a show it sounded. I have a couple of shows from this period, and used them to confirm/eliminate some dates.

Here are some percentages of how sure I am of the shows, and reasonings (I know this is getting way too complicated…). If anyone can confirm/eliminate any dates, please let me know!

1. Odds And Ends – played twice 17 & 22 Sep 2005. Nothing else from 22nd used in compilation. 60% sure
2. Pardon My Heart – played 3 times by band in 2005. Other dates 31 July, 3 Oct. Surmise based on lack of funny comment by Chris at start (3 Oct), lack of other material from 31 July, and seeming heavy use of August Fillmore shows. 80% sure
3. Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You – 20 May, 26 Jul, 10 Aug – 20 May eliminated. Same guy yelling during applause in track 10: only date in common. 95% sure
4. Ride On A Pony – identified by Chris’s comments about show at the end. 100% sure
5. You Don’t Miss Your Water – played 26 Jul, 5 Aug, 19 Oct, 30 Oct. 26 July & 19 Oct not used for other songs, raw track didn’t segue with the previous 5 Aug track played (Pardon my Heart). 60% sure
6. Glad And Sorry – played 9 Aug, 27 Aug, 18 Sep, 11 Oct, 19 Oct. The flawless segue to the next track identifies it as the only time they were played in sequence, 9 Aug. 96% sure
7. Do Right Woman, Do Right Man – played 26 Mar, 17 May, 9 Aug, 17 Sep, 11 Oct, 23 Oct. The flawless segue to from the previous track identifies it as the only time they were played in sequence, 9 Aug. 96% sure
8. Crash On The Levee (Down In The Flood) – played 23 Apr, 2 May, 14 May. A hi-hat intro at the end ruled out the next track played being a jam, leaving only the one date. 90% sure
9. Magic Bus – played twice, 23 & 30 Oct 2005, in the middle of "Thorn in my Pride". Nothing else from 23rd used. 50% sure
10. Sin City – 10 Aug or 18 Oct 2005 (also played once in 1990!). Same guy yelling during applause in track 3: only date in common. 95% sure
11. Big In Vegas – 15 Oct 2005 Only time played. 100% sure
12. Bend Down Low – played 4 times – 18 Mar, 27 Mar, 25 April, 9 Aug 2005. Other dates not used for other songs here. 70% sure
13. Fearless – played 30 Sep, 4-6-11-15-19-27-30 Oct. Played at the end of a set, ruling out 4 & 15 Oct. Date surmised – based on it being the same show used for several other songs in the compilation. 40% sure

Thanks to datfly at etree for the original set – with a big raspberry for not providing the dates!

The three "BC/DC" tracks have been moved to the end of the disc: the disc now starts with an intro as Track 1 (albeit a very odd one!), and finishes with a show closer, Chris’s very funny BC/DC set-closing comments.
