Matador picked up Bailter Space in 1993 and the scene in the U.S. took a brilliant turn from the already tired indie by pushing to the forefront a handful of acts from NZ via their small but thorough mail order distribution catalog. Available were the various Siltbreeze titles (Dead C et al) as well the entire Flying Nun catalog available. Shoegaze had also run its course, but Bailter Space seemed to take what they had been doing (unknowingly to most) for years and take the term “shoegaze” to an entirely different level with Robot World. Or at least I was blown away…and seeing them live was another thing entirely – amazing. And the album that preceded Robot World by 4 years meshed their Gordons sound into a more accessible, almost Sonic Youth-ish territory. An absolute classic LP featured here appended by 4 tracks from 1987’s “Tanker.” If you have yet to hear Bailter Space, do yourself a favor with Thermos, Robot World and Vortura. All equally essential.
