Of Montreal’s Young Froth/Taypiss contains the earliest tracks known to exist from the band. Thus, before even listening, you probably know whether this is for you.
If you thought The Early Four Track Recordings were charming and Cherry Peel remains a personal favorite, you’re in luck. If you’re in it for the costumes and Prince pop, hold out for their next record.
The lyrics are honest and personal, delivered in the straightforward delivery expected of the period.
“You’ve got about as much grace as a bologna sandwich/ You could be my soda pop/ Even though you’ll be overweight by your mid-30s,” Barnes sings in “Industrial Vile” with an innocence reminiscent of the early 60s.
Musically, the songs typically utilize an acoustic guitar, electric guitar and drum machine, with scattered effects throughout.
“From An Innocent Window” builds to a climax with big, splashy drums (and some very strange lyrics). “Propaganda” shows Barnes testing his vocal range over a typical rock backing. The end of “Dee’s Enochian Alphabet” uses tape collage methods all-too-familiar with Elephant 6 fans.
Sound quality changes throughout the album, with the overwhelmingly Beatles-esque “Dumb Acre” sounding somewhat polished while “Murky Limits,” not surprisingly, and “Soot” suffer from low tape quality.
Time hasn’t been a “slow car” for Of Montreal, as Barnes sings in “Intestinal Giant,” and Young Froth shows just how far they’ve come. For better or for worse is up to you, but there’s no arguing this band feared change.
