Album info

Recorded during the “Joy Shapes” sessions back in 2003, ‘Electricity Ghost’ sees Charalambides as a three-piece with mainstays Christina and Tom Carter joined by the very lovely Heather-Leigh Murray (now of Volcanic Tongue) who contributes vocals, pedal steel and psaltry. The result of these sessions is some serious drone-heavy improvised jams, with all the elements melted into a haze of sound and pitch. Guitar sounds are bent and moulded as Heather-Leigh and Christina’s vocals soar like ghostly sirens and each track shimmers and reverberates as if it is being beamed to us from a parallel dimension. There’s a reason why Charalambides are so highly regarded and so rightfully placed as pioneers of the whole New Weird America movement, what they have been doing for years has ended up spreading across the country (and beyond) like wildfire, yet they still prove a masterly touch again and again. This selection of five extended recordings might not have the coherence or fidelity of last year’s unmissable ‘A Vintage Burden’ but what it does have is a spirituality and a unity that so many recordings of this ilk are missing. These are three musicians jamming with each other because it makes sense to, and their connection – as heard through the music, is simply undeniable. These are classic recordings in every sense and for fans of Charalambides should be as indispensable as the Kranky albums (and most specifically the Joy Shapes album itself). Limited to 300 copies this ain’t gonna last long so be quick if you want to make sure you bag a copy.
