This Texas underground group’s ’90s recordings are highly spirited evocations that bear many similiarities to the modernist blues of Loren Mazzacane Connors and Suzanne Langile and the psychedelic guitar noise of Bardo Pond. The group was prolific in the mid-’90s, producing a string of albums on its own Wholly Other label and the Philadelphia lo-fi imprint Siltbreeze. Historic Sixth Ward is striking in its intimacy and the casual manner in which Charalambides creates an avant-garde music with roots in the folk formula, at its best evoking Sandy Denny in her most mournful folk-blues. If one can imagine such a mood, Charalambides bridges the gap between post-Sonic Youth avant-garde rock and dark folk-psychedelia.
