NINJA TUNE XX: 20 YEARS OF BEATS & PIECES For two decades, Ninja Tune has been flexible and, at times, deeply progressive, releasing dank, twisted trip-hop, shattered electronic-minded jazz, ornery hip-hop and music from any number of spinoff micro-movements. Strictly speaking, none of those are in this collection, which essentially takes the past as a given and uses it as a jumping-off point. This doorstop box includes six discs of remixes and unreleased material by artists including the British rapper Roots Manuva, the dystopian post-reggae producer the Bug, the mellow post-jazz outfit Cinematic Orchestra and the cut-and-paste innovators Coldcut, among dozens more. There are also six seven-inch records with dub versions of classic tracks, a hefty book detailing the label’s history, and stickers and posters, including a hand-drawn map of the relationships between every artist on the label, which after this deeply collaborative project, will probably have to be redrawn.
