Country Teaser Ben Wallers is back in his ever-fruitful The Rebel guise this week with another EP of his home-brewed weirdpop. Opener ‘Really?’ kicks things off nicely, a stumbling krautrock-meets-Pere Ubu churn full of droning organ and stumbling drum’n’guitar mush along with a wacky vocal delivery that ranges from slurred mumbles to falsetto squawks. Then there’s the strummy Frogs-ish monologue ‘Strong Genes’, again with droney organ filling out the sound, before the Beefheartian ‘Heavyweight Chicks’ closes the side with distorted vocals and creepily clanking melodies.
There’s two on side B. First ‘Very Well Indeed!’, which mixes rattling lo-fi drums that sound like they’re being played next door rub up against enthusiastic naive organ twiddling multitracked into a disorienting jumble of drones and trills while a fuzzy guitar picks out dinky little melodies. It’s confusing and messy but kind of joyous. Finally there’s ‘Yes’, full of slowed-down samples and woozy broken trip-hop beats, like Vision Fortune getting bonged out and having a seance to contact DJ Screw. Unusual, unpredictable and enjoyable stuff as usual from Wallers.

My comment
Great A-Side, 10 Minutes maybe (?!) worth the price SLOWBOY is asking for this ep. But fuck’em for reselling two songs under different names.
Reading the cover I learned that the text in B2 is Wallers reading a translation of a Thomas Bernhard novel.
