All Music Guide:
“Arising from the relatively quiet music scene in Bristol, England, the Heads comprise singer/guitarist Simon Price, lead guitarist Paul R.A. Allen, bassist H.O. Morgan, and drummer Wayne C. Maskell. On the surface, their independent 1995 debut, Relaxing With the Heads, seemed to slot right into the mid-’90s bustling stoner rock scene, built upon predominant Sabbath and ’70s hard rock influences. But upon closer inspection, it soon became clear that the Heads never even made it that far. Instead, the band draws most of their inspiration from the late ’60s, combining the sounds of proto-punk Detroit and post-British Invasion psychedelic bands with the acid trips typical of U.K. space rock pioneers like Hawkwind. Approached by the Man’s Ruin label (company owner and legendary artist Frank Kozik often claimed that they were his favorite band), the Heads spent the next three years participating in the odd stoner rock collection and issuing a wealth of 7″ singles and split E.P.s, most of which were eventually compiled onto 1998’s The Time Is Now! Personal differences and university studies drove the band apart for the next couple years, but they eventually made an unexpected return in the year 2000 with their second/third album (depending on who you ask), the critically acclaimed Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere. ”Aquarius Records:
“In a world of way too many bands, it seems as if every other group just wants to just plug in, turn on, and turn it up, and somehow sound like some impossible hybrid of Hawkwind, Spacemen 3, the Stooges, Monster Magnet and Loop, the result unfortunately but not surprisingly is a lot of pointless psychedelic noise. Sure there are a handful of bands who do manage to pull it off, like White Hills, Carlton Melton, Wooden Shjips, Burnt Hills, Gnod, Bardo Pond, Eternal Tapestry, and Heavy Winged, and as much as we do love ALL of those bands, it’s safe to say, the Heads still reign supreme. These long running UK spaced out psychedelic riff rockers effortlessly transform a dingy basement packed with amps and a beat up old drum kit, a floor littered with distortion pedals and empty beer bottles into some sort of interdimensional sonic starship, a crushing, blown out, distortion drenched, riff heavy, psychedelic space rock TRIP. And while all the various elements are present, it’s what they do with them that counts, and listening to the Heads, and this record again, even years and years later, it really does sound like maybe they’re still the only ones who know what do with them.”keeponrockin’ sez:
The Heads have been called the best band in the world by members of our very own #IT. Their music is impossibly rare to find in any format, so much so that it seems they go out of their way NOT to sell albums. I have been collecting it from the start, so here you go.I would also like to open this month’s Baldy’s Sweetness up a bit by adding “…and related” to the mix. Related is purposefully vague, but The Heads have done split’s with White Hills, Wooden Shjips, Big Naturals, Magic Dirt, Plastic Crimewave Sound and Lillydamwhite. Members of The Heads have played with Gnod, Hacker, Temple of Maskill and Fuzz Against Junk. But don’t limit your contribution to just these, if you can link it…post it with an explanation of the connection. Examples might be “Played a show with…” “Influenced by…” “Smoked a J with..” Etc.
