Six originals showcasing free improvisation and elegance
Steve Lacy played a straight horn, but his music was always a bit twisted, always fully round. The Window is an outstanding trio recording from the prolific soprano saxophonist’s fertile mid-’80s period. Lacy was generally more interested in surprising, peripatetic melodies than in cool chord changes, and the lean backing of bassist Jean-Jacques Avenel and drummer Oliver Johnson, both longtime Lacy associates, seems ideal for these six originals, on which delicate structures give way to free improvisation and vice versa with feline elegance. The title cut sets a mood of prayerful, East-West contemplation, though there are lighter yet still typically idiosyncratic moments as well. “Flakes” begins with a long, twice-played melody that’s more like a chain of related, fragmentary melodies (or snowflakes), followed by a bridge of sorts (probably a lead theme for most tunesmiths), which (over three minutes in) gives way to an affecting adlib on one level the piece is formally traditional (Lacy wanted to write “instant standards”), and yet it sounds very odd, unpredictable. “A Complicated Scene” lays down a bass line reminiscent of “In Walked Bud,” over which Lacy repeats variations on a simple five-note tune over and again, less like a mantra than the phone number of a potentially definitive romantic prospect. “The Gleam” pursues a long-term interest in bird-song (and perhaps chalkboards), while “Twilight” and “Retreat” undoes a few buttons with hot, though not unrestrained, blowing.
