Album info
THE BEST.
Dan Melchior’s finest hour now sees an official release for the first time. Shelved for most of the decade due to a petty dispute between artist and fartist, the making of this double album, just over 80 minutes in length. Their fortunes tangled up in this release, its members having played with and around one another in the years leading up through 2003, the non-release of this record, along with personal flare-ups, shattered this lineup (Bruno Meyrick-Jones, now in Prince Rupert’s Drops, on guitar; Brad Truax, of Home, large-scale tour management, and occasionally Soldiers of Fortune and with Meyrick-Jones, Jah Division, on bass; and Greg Anderson, who backed Holly Golightly and Melchior with Truax at one time, then sat in for two of Oakley Hall’s best records, on drums), and sent Melchior packing for the hills of North Carolina, where he lives to this day. It was not an amicable split by any account, and once you hear the work they did across these nearly two dozen songs, and know the amount of time they spent on getting this right, you’ll understand – this was to be the crowning achievement of the Broke Revue, the one album that would make the world outside of 150 people in NYC and assorted others around the globe realize that this was one of the best rock ‘n’ roll bands anywhere. And seriously, what a record this is, a sprawling, doleful, infectiously melodic romp through singer-songwriterdom, fusing the best elements of the Kinks and the Equals throughout their respective heydays, all the while showing those who could focus long enough that all garage rock didn’t necessarily have to pay homage to blues chord progressions. Here, the band really fought to escape pigeonholing of its sound, and layered on extra instrumentation (the triumphant synth strings of “A Girl Called Saccharine,” the reverie of trumpets on “Replica,” just for starts) to the desired effect. Nothing sounds out of place, and there’s no try-harding in effect, just a lot of hard work and heartbreaking effort that pretty much went to waste. Steps have been made to make this record difficult to find, and its hefty per-unit cost and subsequent deletion from its distributor means that you’ll likely have to grab one of these directly from the source, if you intend to own it at all (and those who would want to had better hurry, as this is rumored to be the final Hook or Crook release). It’s not a perfect record, nor does it ascribe to perfection, though at moments you’ll believe they were coming close. It’s also not something that’s super-easy to sit through all at once, but that’s why it’s a double album – play one record, play the other one later. No regrets. You’ll wish more bands gave this much of a shit; moreover, you’ll wish they could have made this lineup work. It’s the best record Melchior’s ever made, apart from Christmas for the Crows, and is an essential missing piece in the grand scheme of rock bands from the last frantic dash for recognition in the tony ‘00s. Melchior puts out a LOT of releases, but this is the one you need. (http://www.hookorcrook.com)
